A 36-year-old woman has died after being in a collision with a fire appliance, which was responding to a 999 call that proved to be a false alarm.

The woman’s 10-year-old daughter is currently in a critical but stable condition in hospital, following the collision on Sheffield Road, at the junction of Weedon Street, near Meadowhall. They were travelling in a Subaru Impreza at around 10.45pm on Sunday, when the collision took place with the fire appliance from Darnall station.  It was responding on blue lights to reports of a warehouse fire on Old Sheffield Road, Rotherham.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue sends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of those involved.

None of the firefighters involved in the collision were injured; they have been offered the services of SYFR’s internal support systems.

Both emergency services started separate investigations into the incident immediately; SYFR’s investigation is continuing today.

South Yorkshire Police have arrested a 17-year-old man on suspicion of making a hoax 999 call to South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue.  Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has information about it is asked to contact the South Yorkshire Police accident witness helpline on 0114 220 2970.
