Fire Crew Prevents House Blaze
Firefighters say a Sheffield couple were minutes away from a serious fire at their home in the early hours of Tuesday after their wheelie bin was set alight.
The fire spread to the window of the Meadowhead property causing the glass to shatter.
Firefighters from Lowedges, who were already on the road dealing with a separate wheelie bin blaze, were alerted to the fire by a passing motorist.
Watch Manager Justin Childes says the blaze would have spread to the living room within minutes: “This incident shows how setting fire to wheelie bins can put lives in danger. Fortunately we caught the blaze in its early stages but this could have had nasty consequences. The property had a smoke alarm but the batteries had been removed, and the couple only woke when they heard the firefighters outside.”
Two other houses on Meadowhead had their wheelie bins set alight around the same time, around 4am on Tuesday.
Man Rescued From Blazing House
South Yorkshire firefighters have rescued a man from a house fire in the Firvale area of Sheffield.
The man, in his 30s, was found unconscious in his blazing lounge and was carried to safety by firefighters from Elm Lane station. Once outside the house they performed emergency first aid and assisted paramedics before he was taken to hospital.
The fire crews had been called to the house on Edensor Road at 3.30pm on Tuesday. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have now extinguished the blaze but the lounge has been gutted and the rest of the house has suffered smoke damage.
No other residents were in the property at the time. An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
