Update on Bramall Lane Incident – 1430

Fire crews remain at the scene of an earlier fire at Bramall Lane in Sheffield where an acetylene cylinder was on fire on the 7th floor of a hotel construction.

Firefighters are continuing to cool the cylinder, and are inspecting it at regular intervals using a thermal imaging camera, to assess its temperature.

A 200 metre cordon is still in place, and Cherry Street and a section of Bramall Lane remain closed.

Incident Commander Tony Carlin said at 14:30: “Our estimation at 9 o’clock this morning was that the cordon could be in place for 24 hours, and on the current assessment that situation has not changed. We will continue to cool the cylinder until it is safe to remove it from the scene.”

Update on Incident at Bramall Lane - 11:20

Firefighters are still at the scene of an earlier fire at Bramall Lane in Sheffield where an acetylene cylinder was on fire, on the 7th floor of a new hotel construction.

The fire has been extinguished and firefighters are continuing to cool it using a water jet. Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using a thermal imaging camera to assess how hot the cylinder is.

An 200 metre exclusion zone is still in place, which is the standard distance for incidents involving acetylene cylinders. A number of roads remain closed.

Approximately 30 staff from Sheffield United have been evacuated from the stadium, 90 people from the business centre and 60 people who were working on the hotel construction.
