Couple Treated After Chip Pan Blaze

An elderly couple were given oxygen therapy by firefighters after a chip pan fire at their Sheffield home.

The 78-year-old male and female, from Binsted Road in Wadsley Bridge, suffered smoke inhalation in the blaze shortly after midday on Saturday, but did not need further medical treatment.

Fire crews from Elm Lane attended the incident, which highlighted the danger of using chip pans.

Residents are advised to swap chip pans for deep fat fryers.

Toddler Sets Bedroom Alight

Householders have been urged to keep lighting materials away from youngsters after a four-year-old set her bedroom net curtains ablaze.

The girl started the fire using a cigarette lighter, causing fire crews from Mansfield Road to be called to the house on Algar Place, Arbourthorne, at around 6.30pm.

Fortunately the bedroom escaped serious damage but Watch Manager Martin Toovey said: “This fire could have been a lot worse. There was minimal damage on this occasion but it is a useful reminder to everyone to keep lighters and matches out of the reach of children.”

Caravans Torched Again

Eight caravans have been destroyed in the third arson attack on a Sheffield caravan park in a matter of weeks.

Two other caravans suffered fire damage in the attack on the Moor Valley park in Mosborough. Fire crews from Mansfield Road and Aston Park were called to the blaze shortly after 11.33pm and used two main jets to prevent the fire from spreading to other caravans on the site.

They eventually put the fire out at 1.00am on Sunday.
