A car fire in Ecclesfield, Sheffield on Tuesday afternoon damaged an external gas pipe, causing a gas leak.

Firefighters from Rivelin and Elm Lane were called to High Street at around 3.30pm and found the car well alight.

The blaze was extinguished but caused damage to an external gas pipe at a Butchers shop so officers from Transco and a specialist team from the National Grid were called to the scene. Firefighters left the incident in the hands of the National grid at around 6pm.

South Yorkshire Police closed part of High Street during the incident.

The cause of the car fire is believed to be accidental.
